new mama workout essentials

January is the time for resolutions, often about health, so I’m sharing my workout arsenal. I had heard about Tracy Anderson before and even added her post-pregnancy DVD to a birthday wish list. For some reason each DVD was selling for $30+, until recently when the prices dropped to under $10. With my new mom body, I had to jump for it.

Surrounded by a cold winter and an active baby, DVDs work for my life. I used the postpartum version during the summer, while Evelyn played underfoot and chewed on my yoga mat. I stopped to avoid burning too many calories while breastfeeding, but as my metabolism returns to normal, I’ll be starting the mat workout. On the days when I’m feeling gutsy, I’ll attempt the dance cardio.

My review:
The moves are unique and knit my muscles together into a feminine form.  Tracy says that the day after you work out, you should feel ache-y, (like when you have the flu).  This is because she works all your minor muscle groups, instead of the major ones (like quads, biceps, etc.)  No bulk – love that.

However, the workout is one continuous chapter, so it is difficult to jump around on the DVD if you are a multi-tasking mom. I bought, but have yet to try, the dance cardio - mainly because I am self-conscious and have a tiny 9 month-old for an audience.

Tracy Anderson Method: Post-Pregnancy Workout, $9.99

Tracy Anderson Method: Mat Workout, $7.99

Tracy Anderson Method: Dance Cardio Workout, $7.99

and you'll need a mat and two pound weights.

  2. I've never heard of her :) Will have to check it out because I'm looking to switch things up - been doing Jillian Michaels and running but sometimes you need to mix things up!
And btw, on the dance cardio: just GO FOR IT! :) Esp because you only have a 9 month old looking on. No judgement there! She's the safest audience you'll ever have :)

  3. These sound great Lindsey...I'm not postpartum, but being a runner, it's sometimes tough to motivate myself to get my workout on in the cold winter months..not to mention, I always need moves for toning. I can't wait to try these..thank you for sharing!

    1. Brooke - these are especially great for toning. Since you're already a runner, I'm sure you could see big results fast. I had never had a workout shape my body so quickly, and I used to do pilates every week.

  5. So glad to hear a good review of these from someone I trust! I almost bought the post-pregnany dvd while I was pregnant, but it was more expensive then. If you don't mind me asking, do you follow her diet recommendations, too? From what I've read, they're pretty strict and low-calorie.

    1. Nope - no dieting over here as long as I'm breastfeeding. I'm actually not a great diet-er anyways. I prefer to work out, and then get to eat what I want. :) I LOVE the post-pregnancy dvd.

I did read her book - 30 Day Method, which describes her diet in detail. If you're looking for a good detox/diet - I would look through the book first, to see if it would work for you. It's just not my thing :)

    2. That's what I wanted to hear. I'm more of a mostly-healthy/everything-in-moderation eater; I go a little crazy when I started restricting too much. I'm excited about trying the dvd now!
